This classic stately mansion sits on approx. 3,923sqm of riverside rainforest, with no neighbours, yet is just 2km from Brisbane’s CBD. For sale by Christine Rudolph of Ray White New Farm.
Nareke is a trophy riverfront estate nestled in its own private rainforest at the end of a secluded cul-de-sac, just 2km from Brisbane’s CBD.
Agent Christine Rudolph told WILLIAMS MEDIA, “Nareke is an epic celebration in concrete and steel of the privileged life we lead in Queensland. It is a special feeling resulting from enjoying breathtaking views. The elevation above the river and the privacy also instil a further sense of wellbeing. To be so uniquely positioned on virtually an acre of flood-free river frontage and surrounded by rainforest, with no neighbours and an abundance of native birds is a dream lifestyle.”
Built in 1996 on the site of General Douglas MacArthur’s home during the Pacific campaign, Nareke was designed by architect Michael Jullyan, Director of Thinktank Architects. Mr Jullyan told WILLIAMS MEDIA, “As the house replaced an 80 year old colonial, we wanted to create a stately home that would look and feel as if it had been on site for a hundred years and that it may have been an original stately mansion on the river.”
The timeless, Victorian style mansion boasts three storeys of living space, including two fully self contained guest quarters, across a parcel of approx. 3,923sqm. Interiors feature Carrara marble tiled and carpeted floors, polished timber, ornate ceilings and cornices throughout, as well as glazing to capture the stunning river views.
Mr Jullyan told WILLIAMS MEDIA the design was to be as much about family as it was about entertaining. “Formal lounge and dining were created along with the kitchen living spaces. Broad verandahs linking all the spaces imbue the traditional vernacular that we sought to capture. Extensive earthworks were undertaken to allow breakout areas and to provide some flat platforms.”
The home’s entry-level reveals the living areas, including formal lounge and dining rooms, which lead out onto decks offering water views and capturing cool river breezes. A circular kitchen with granite counter tops sits beside a casual family room with its own deck and beautiful atrium, creating an illusion of treehouse living.
A separate, fully self-contained, double story guest quarters, with living, kitchen and bathroom, is also accessed on this level, joined by a large deck.
A statement timber staircase leads to the upper level, which accommodates four of the home's seven bedrooms, a retreat and a study/library. The master bedroom on this level opens out on to a veranda and has a luxurious marble ensuite with spa bath.
An incredible five-storey viewing tower with a roof dome opens up to the night sky, while doubles as access to the roof for maintenance. According to Mr Jullyan, this was a special request of the original owner. “As a keen astronomer, Dr Miros requested the top of the rotunda be openable to allow his telescope to view the night sky,” he told WILLIAMS MEDIA.
The lower level of the home, adjoining the pool, includes a fully serviced guest apartment, with full kitchen, living area, 2 bedrooms, bathroom and laundry. This level also accommodates disabled access with a chairlift and there is provision here for a temperature controlled 2,000 bottle wine cellar.
All the of buildings are well above flood levels and a pontoon, which can accommodate a vessel in excess of 60 metres, is anchored by a stainless steel cable in case of future flood.
Within the grounds, there are manicured gardens, a 23-metre gas-heated swimming pool overlooking the Brisbane River, garden shed, boathouse, two workshops and an area suitable for use as a gym.
Christine Rudolph told WILLIAMS MEDIA, “There's even a seasonal creek with a bridge, and walking tracks in the rainforest designated park (Dauphin Terrace Park) adjoining the Western boundary. Quite simply, this is an extraordinary piece of prestige Queensland real estate.”
Already boasting 60m of river frontage, the property comes with the potential to purchase another 30 metres of absolute riverfront land which is currently owned by the State government. This is a gazetted road which can only be bought by the existing landowner.
The estate is within the Brisbane State High School catchment area, opposite the Queensland University which can be accessed via the Eleanor Schonell Bridge and close to the Brisbane Cat terminal.
