Norio Matsumoto from Rise Corp in Tokyo says there are regulations around short-stay rentals, with the minimum stay being a month. Anything less than this and visitors are encouraged to stay in hotels. "Short term, apartment rental is usually cheaper than a hotel so the people who would stay for more than a month choose to stay in an apartment," he said. "There are many companies (Oak Wood and Mori building are biggest) doing short term apartment rentals in Tokyo and they are all nearly full. Japanese apartments are mostly unfurnished, especially for long-term leases of more than a year, while on the other hand, short term apartment rentals from one month lease are all furnished."
