While there may be a rental shortage across Australia, the number of investors buying up at auction has stayed steady in 2022 says Ray White.
While there may be a rental shortage across Australia, the number of investors buying up at auction has stayed steady in 2022.
Out of 406 auctions in January, 25 per cent of all buyers were investors. Brisbane had the highest rate of investors buying at auction with 37 per cent of all Ray White auctions going to an investment purchaser. This was followed by the Gold Coast where 35 per cent of all auction purchasers were an investor. Canberra’s Ray White auctions recorded the lowest number of investors at 12 per cent.
Meanwhile in February, the number dropped slightly to 22 per cent of all auction buyers out of 1,143, but with more than double the amount of auctions than January, this isn’t particularly surprising. Perth held the spot for highest number of investor auction buyers, however this was recorded from only five auctions in the Western Australian capital. Regional Australia came next with 31 per cent of all auction buyers recorded as investors, closely followed by the Gold Coast at 28 per cent and Adelaide at 26 per cent of all auction buyers. Again, Canberra had the smallest number of investors buying at auction, coming in at 14 per cent.
Fast forward to this month and the Ray White Group has already scheduled 437 auctions across the country with a 23 per cent share of investors. A massive 50 per cent of Gold Coast auction buyers said they were investors while that number was at 33 per cent for regional Australia. This month, Sydney’s share of auction buyers were made up of 25 per cent investors - a number that has grown this year, climbing from 18 per cent in January.
As for auctions this weekend, the group has 681 scheduled - up 27 per cent on last year. Included in that number are 403 auctions scheduled for Saturday. Ray White Melbourne has 187 auctions scheduled, overtaking Sydney again where there are a close 178 auctions booked. In Brisbane, Ray White has scheduled 73 auctions and there are another 48 for Ray White in Adelaide.
