Architects Johnson Pilton Walker's development plans for the historic Campbell's Stores have gone on public display.
Campbell's Stores is a historic row of sandstone warehouses that was built in 1839. Originally used for storage and shipping, they form part of a 'cultural ribbon' that wraps around Sydney's harbour foreshore. The heritage-listed buildings were expanded in the 1970s and 80s to house high-end restaurants, and are in need of restoration.
A consortium known as Tallawoladah Pty Ltd is funding the development.
The Campbell's Store precinct is ripe for improvement. With spectacular harbour views and a waterfront setting, the area is close to Bridgeclimb and Sydney's increasingly busy Overseas Passenger Terminal. The area is also a significant link between the northern CBD and Barangaroo.
A key part of the development will be removing some of the modifications made in the 1980s, including shade canopies and a glazed pavilion. The buildings will undergo extensive conservation work, and the roof will be replaced.
New additions will improve public access by connecting the site with the rest of The Rocks. A canopy will be built on the waterfront to make that space more usable, and The Hickson Road side of the building will be adapted for outdoor dining and greater pedestrian movement.
One of the most notable features of the development will be the addition of a contemporary glass building, called Bay 12, which will be built at the northern end of the site. This new building will provide a clear counterpoint to the original heritage building.
The plans are on public exhibition, and submissions can be made at www.majorprojects.planning.nsw.gov.au until 18 December 2015.
