France has a new president, Emmanuel Macron, making it the perfect time to examine which president oversaw the biggest gains in French property prices.
French President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing oversaw the strongest growth in property prices, with prices climbing 141.5 per cent during his seven years in office from May 1974 to May 1981, according to Knight Frank.
But property also performed well under Jacques Chirac. Prices rose 138.2% during his 12 years in office.
But when annualised, the numbers show a different story. Prices rose 20.2 per cent per annum under Giscard d'Estaing, and only 11.5 per cent per annum under Chirac.
Property prices in France fell 9.3 per cent in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis, and have remained virtually static since then.
Hollande holds the dubious title of being the only French President since 1970 to have seen prices decline during his presidency. Prices fell 4.3% during his five years in office.
