Austin Maynard Architects has found practical solutions in a revamped home for a growing family.
The project involved adding a new two-storey extension to the single-storey building, and made a feature of including storage without losing precious space.
Rather than having cupboards against walls, storage boxes are incorporated into the building's floor. The 'toy boxes' are incorporated into the downstairs living areas and the children's bedrooms.
In the living spaces on the ground floor, the new section is separated from the original building by a courtyard, allowing air and light to flood in.
The dining area is on the upper level, beside the courtyard. Perforated metal is used on the home's exterior, but also through the interiors, on the staircase and on the upstairs floor, creating a barrier, but allowing light and air to permeate.
A bright yellow bathtub features in the family bathroom, and is made in an easy to clean fibreglass without any tight corners to trap dirt.
The home's design works with the chaos of family life, rather than pretending it doesn't exist.
